Sufferer Fear
It is important for the helper to be aware of the harmful effects colluding can have on treatment. This occurs when the clinician responds to the sufferer’s fears by allowing her to believe that there is a way to progress without facing her fears. This may take the form of smothering the sufferer with sympathy. Fears need to be discussed as fears, but most fears are rarely talked away entirely and need to be confronted if they are to be overcome. Treatment can also become stuck due to a stalemate where the patient and helper are making their moves with little or no effect. In these cases discussion needs to form around what needs to occur to move forward.
The treatment of AN is complex and involves multiple factors. AN has significant medical components, psychological components, and social components.
