Respiratory Sinus Arrhythmia (RSA)
Frequency characteristics of HRV have been used to assess sympathetic-parasympathetic balance. Respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) is a variation in heart rate that accompanies breathing. HRV biofeedback influences that individual to breathe at his or her specific resonant HRV frequency. This frequency is the rate of breathing where the amplitude of the HRV maximized and the baroeflexes are stimulated. HRV both improves autonomic function and baroeflexes gain. Therefore, the resonant characteristic is that oscillation persists after initial stimulation. The biofeedback provides that individual with information about his or her RSA. By having the person breathe at rates of 4.5, 5, 5.5, 6, and 6.5 breaths per minutes that resonant frequency is found. It takes about 4 sessions at HRV biofeedback to become proficient.
