Presentation of AN

Many people with AN seek medical assistance and health care provides must be aware that medical complications may be the first presentation of an eating disorder.  Patients may present to their physician with vague complaints of fatigue, anxiety, depression, or stress.  Some may seek assistance for headaches, abdominal discomfort, hair loss, brittle hair and nails, or cold intolerance.  Of course low weight would be an obvious sign of AN, but the patient is most likely to minimize weight concerns.  A physician should do a complete physical including blood work.  Many physical complications can arise in patients with AN including cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, hormonal, pulmonary, and renal complications.  In particular sufferers who vomit or abuse laxatives or diuretics may become dehydrated or otherwise have the internal chemical environment seriously deranged, thus monitoring electrolyte level is quite important.  A defining feature of AN in amenorrhoea and AN can lead to osteoporosis.  The health psychologist needs to be aware and consult with a physician at times.
