Music Therapy and Listening

Listening to the music is the most common form music therapy is used to manage stress and involves simply listening to the music. This can include listening to prerecorded, improvised by the therapist, composed by the therapist, or co-created by the therapist and the client. Another form of music therapy involves performing, practicing, or learning pre-composed music. Emphasis in this type of therapy is on process rather then product. Another form is music improvisation, which allows one to explore new identities while receiving feedback from others. Finally, compositional method can be used. This involves allowing the client to express feelings in a creative and contained manner and having these feelings acknowledged and validated in musical form. Music therapy occurs in the context of a trained therapist where there is safety, empathy, trust, and safety.
