IPT for Bulimia

IPT is short-term and usually consists of on four to six months of weekly 50-minute sessions.  IPT views BN through the medical model and views BN as an illness that is not the patient’s fault.  The therapist educates the patient on the symptoms, the disorder itself, and relapse prevention.  The therapist does this in the context of a warm, empathetic, and supportive therapeutic relationship.  IPT does not focus directly on the eating symptoms but on underlying problem areas.  IPT has been found to make changes slower in some cases than CBT and this is accounted for by recognizing that it takes time to make interpersonal change.  Furthermore, evidence supports that interpersonal functioning may play a role in the development/maintenance of psychological disorders.

Evidence exists for interpersonal influences on the development of body image and self-esteem, including that role in the development of eating disorders.  Being teased by others in one of the most commonly reported factors that shape body satisfaction.  There is also research that suggests that perceptions to peer acceptance may serve to elevate body image concerns and subsequent disturbance and there is evidence that modeling of peers occurs as well.
