Grief and Loss
Grief is a response to loss that involves a wide range of feelings, thoughts, and behaviors. Grief is experienced differently and the context in which the loss occurs influences the grief reaction. The normal grief reaction tends to get better with time, but everyone has their own time and way of coping. Complicated grief occurs when the normal grief reaction extends past the excepted time of about 1 year, but it is important to remember that this time varies depending on the person and circumstance.
I offer a warm and safe place to discuss grief and loss. I have clinically assessed and treated a large number of people who present with grief and loss being their primary concern. Treatment options and length vary as personal goals and the cause of grief vary. I draw from multiple evidenced based treatment techniques to create a multi-dimensioned plan that fits your goals. I am aware of the special challenges that different social, occupational, family, and cultural contexts can bring.
It is very important to not self-diagnosis grief. With so much information available to us on the Internet today this can be tempting, but grieving can have very real effects on your function and needs the attention of a mental health professional. Talk therapy is very effective at working with grief and loss..
Because of the wide variety of losses and grief reactions, and the complexities and subtleties of professional diagnosis and treatment, feel free to call me to discuss further. I am experienced and trained in a variety of treatment and assessment methods. Contact a licensed mental health professional or your family doctor if you have concerns about grief.
