Exercise Therapy

Exercise is becoming recognized as a potent stress-relieving strategy and a preventative measure to symptoms of emotional distress. The acute effects of exercise are what seem to relieve stress and tension and the long-term metabolic and biochemical effects serve to buffer the distress associated with day-to-day challenges. Exercise has been considered an important part of health since antiquity. However, it has become more and more important as sociocultural shifts have been away from physical labor to more abstract psychological stressors.

Exercise therapy combines exercise with traditional therapy. For instance, go for a walk with a client during a therapy session. Exercise has been found to be effective with mood symptoms, as it has been observed that while exercising people become less self-conscious and less inhibited and therefore more willing to talk about what they are feeling. Exercise is enjoyable, challenging, and satisfying on completion. This can lead to substantial mood improvements in itself. Exercise can include a variety of activities and it is not restricted to aerobic activities. In addition, high-intensity aerobic activity is not necessary to achieve the mental health benefits of exercise.

Several physiological pathways exist that may help in accounting for the psychological benefits of exercise including endorphin release, hardiness effects, sleep quality, and changes in several neurotransmitters and/or receptors in the autonomic nervous system.
