Electroencephalogram (EEG)
Another form of biofeedback is neurofeedback is the electroencephalogram (EEG) changes. Neurofeedback is based on the finding that people can recognize when they are producing a mental state related to particular brain wave frequencies. Alpha frequencies are an area of focus because they are an inverse indicator of activation. However, some people do not benefit when alpha is increased, but rather when it is decreased. The effects of stress are seen in an individual’s mental state, which can be inferred from the EEG pattern as well as other physiological variables. Changing external circumstance or reframing internal cognitive sets and physiological response can manage stress. Neurofeedback measures variations in the amplitude of various brain wave frequencies to alter biochemical and physiological aspects of an individual’s stress response. Different profiles exists that represent different states of stress e.g. anxiety/panic. By learning to regulate these responses people can use neurofeedback to regulate their response to stress. EEG can be done with as few as two channels, up to over 19 channels. This process can create a state of relaxed, alert, aware, calm, focused, and problem-solving concentration.
