CBT for Bulimia

CBT has been well documented as an effective treatment for BN.  CBT is based on the notion that emotional and behavioral experiences are mediated by the way an individual cognitively processes information.  CBT puts dysfunctional beliefs at the center of its model for disorder and change.  Perceptions and cognitions mediated by both surface thoughts and automatic, less accessible ones that are more profound.  A CBT therapist is made aware to consider that life experiences will be part of what forms core beliefs.  Schemas are created to make sense of these experiences and the work of CBT is to promote more healthy ones that are more flexible and adaptive.  In the context of eating disorders CBT therapists recognize that a central focus is the overvalue of weight and shape in an attempt to compensate for feelings of low self-esteem, believing that achieving that ideal will enhance self-worth.  These ideals are out of reach for the sufferer and only obtainable by engaging id behavioral disturbances.  A 20-session outpatient program for the treatment of BN is generally expected.
