Bulimia

The best evaluated drug treatment for bulimia nervosa (BN) with positive results is various antidepressants.  The majority of these trials trails have been with adults and using fluoxetine, which is the only U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved for BN.  Although most antidepressants have been adequately evaluated.  The trials show a definite effect of antidepressants on symptoms of BN such as binge eating, vomiting, and concerns about weight and shape.  Drug treatment would also be expected to decrease levels of anxiety and depression.  There is little information on the extent dieting and fasting is replaced by normal meal patterns while on fluoxetine.  Also of note is that psychotherapy, in particular cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) has been found to be a more effective treatment for BN.
