Body Image Issues
Body image has an internal and external component. The external component is how our bodies look and the internal component is how we sense and experience our bodies. Many factors influence the internal component of body image and how we sense our bodies. For example, popular media shows images to us of the “ideal”. When our perception is that we do not meet these ideals issues with wanting to lose weight or put on muscle can arise and our body image satisfaction can decrease. It is important to keep in mind that our perceptions influence this process more than the reality of how we look. These perceptions are not only influenced by media, but are also influenced by other social and cultural conditions.
Body dysmorphic disorder is a condition where the sufferer has excessive concern about a perceived physical defect. Body dysmorphic disorder often occurs along with depression and anxiety issues.
Talk therapy is very effective at resolving the majority of body image issues. Because body image issues are often correlated with other psychiatric issues including depression, psychiatric pharmaceuticals can be part of effective treatment in addition to talk therapy.
