Bare Attention
Mediation, on a basic level, rests attention on relatively meaningless repetitive stimuli such as the breath. This process involves the cultivation of bare attention, of training the process of attention in and of itself, rather than as a function of engagement with the object. This cultivates a more novel, creative, or “wiser” perspectives on life challenges, allowing for fresh, alternative choices . In summary meditation: 1) frees the senses from whatever is pulling at them; 2) provides a way to observe patterns of responding and reacting; 3) with practice conditioned reactions and responses gradually disengage and weaken and; 4) allows more distinct levels of processing to emerge.
