AN Family Treatment
Family for treatment for anorexia is controversial, some argue that family is the worst people to having involved in treatment; others view them as necessary. People with an onset before 19 years old and a history of less than three years did better with family therapy and the reverse was true for those with later onset and longer history. The Maudsley approach is an agnostic approach that takes a non-authoritarian stance and promotes empowering the family as a resource for the AN sufferer. In this way it is consistent with aspects of strategic family therapy and Milan approaches. It is also consistent with structural family therapy because it directs the therapist to facilitate parental alignment and place siblings in appropriate roles. The family is a collaborative member of the therapy process in the Maudsley approach.
