Multidisciplinary

Most programs employ a multidisciplinary team and focus on group therapy.  There is debate over the ideal length of stay and little is known about how to best sequence inpatient and partial hospital or how to match patient characteristics to programs.  Patients who reach target weights as inpatients, are much less likely to relapse, however, some argue that inpatient treatment is ineffective and may be harmful.  Treatment is typically implemented by a multidisciplinary team and includes observation to block eating-disordered behaviors, behavior therapy, individual, family, and group therapy, nutritional and psycho-education, and life skills training.  Relapse rates for successfully treated inpatients are 30% to 50% within one year of discharge, but treatment needs to be followed with outpatient care to prevent relapse.  No one factor has consistently been found to predict outcome across studies.
